What’s the Deal with our Wheat?

gmo-wheatHere at The Corner, we know how important it is to know the facts about GMOs and avoid them at all costs. One question we get asked a lot is why wheat has been such a hot topic over the last few years and why gluten-free has become so popular? Many people suffer from gluten intolerance or celiac disease, and the incidences of these ailments are on the rise. In 1975 just 0.21% of Americans had been diagnosed with celiac disease, today that figure is over 1.00% of the population (FoodMatters).

So what’s the deal? Some sources claim that non-organic wheat products have a more adverse effect on their quality of life than organic wheat products, and recent studies have begun providing the science to back these claims. A new peer-reviewed research paper published in the Journal of Interdisciplinary Toxicology shows that celiac disease, gluten intolerance, and IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) are on the rise worldwide, and that the rise of these conditions has a linear relationship with the growing use of glyphosate (Roundup) herbicide on conventional wheat products.

Standard conventional wheat harvest protocol in the US is to saturate the crops with Roundup several days prior to sending the combine harvesters through the field, which allows for an earlier, easier and more substantial harvest. Wheat is also becoming present in more and more products like vitamins and minerals, beauty products and even sugars.

So how can you avoid this glyphosate-laden wheat? Buy non-GMO and organic whenever possible and be sure to read ingredient labels! You’ll find plenty of options right here at The Corner. 🙂
