The FDA’s Nutrition Label Redesign

The Food and Drug Administration recently proposed several major changes to Nutrition Fact labels that would make them easier for consumers to comprehend.

The new labels would put a larger focus on total calories, added sugars, and other key nutrients. As pictured above, a greater emphasis will be put on serving sizes as well. Additionally, serving sizes of many products will be forced to increase, in order to more accurately reflect how much consumers actually eat or drink at a time.

“For example, if you buy a 20-ounce soda, you’re probably not going to stop drinking at the 8-ounce mark. The new rules would require that entire soda bottle to be one serving size — making calorie counting simpler.”

American families are learning and caring much more about nutrition, and these proposed changes would make healthy choices even more accessible. We hope they pass!
