Being Local is about a lot more than bringing you the best local products, produce and crafts we can find. It’s about being part of the community. Sure we work at the best Natural Market around but in our off time, we explore because-we’re local, too! Here are a few of the things we like to do in this great community of ours!

A Thought-Provoking Lecture

Jamie Oliver talks about how learning to cook healthy food can save children’s lives.  There’s not much to say by way of introduction, I think I’ll just let the guy speak for himself.  Really, watch this video.

Wherever You Go, Go Green!

Think this is your only accommodation option if you’re trying to travel green?  Not true!  Check out the Lodging section of GreenVacationHub.com.  From a houseboat in India to a full-service resort in Greece, these destinations are all considered Green based on their energy/water usage, air and food purity and recycling practices.  There are even 5 listings right here in New Jersey if you’re just looking for a weekend getaway.  Sure, I’d prefer the Indian houseboat but I wouldn’t mind an eco-friendly mini-vacation away from it all… just, you know, if anyone’s asking.

Time For Some Culture!

Looking to expand your horizons a little?  How about a night at the theatre?  The New Jersey Repertory Company’s production of Bakersfield Mist is held over until February 5th. There’s nothing quite like a night at the theatre and the New Jersey Repertory is the Jersey Shore’s own year-round professional theatrical company.  Get your tickets or view their upcoming productions at http://njrep.org.

Dear Diary

Hey all, let me tell you a little bit about my day today!  After a great shift at Nature’s Corner I decided to run some errands and explore a little bit.  So here’s where I went.

My first stop was  The Paperback Exchange in Belmar,  I’m talking wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling, front door-to-back books!  If you’re at all like me you’re probably already pretty excited.  The best part by was the proprietor, Sharon (?) who was organizing this phantasmagorical bibliopolis barefoot.  We talked for a while about some authors and genres  and before I knew it she’d pulled a Nabokov for me that she was about to shelve.  I ended up picking something else and, to my surprise was rung up to the hefty sum of 25 cents!

Armed with some stoke-worthy reading I headed north to Asbury Park and Second Life Bicycles.  I’d been in a while back looking at bikes and had found one that so fondly recalled my days as a Brooklyn cyclist I had to ask about it.  You know how much it was?  Fifty five bucks!  I gave them a twenty dollar deposit and left them to work over my new-found two wheeled chariot.  Today I was finally able to pick it up.  Now comes the amazing part.  When I walked in, the owner asked me if I was there to pick up a bike.  I answered in the affirmative expecting to give my name or number as I’d long since misplaced my original claim ticket.    Instead of requiring two forms of identification and a piece of personal mail, she walked directly to the row of bikes, in which mine was stacked and pulled it out, repaired, refurbished and good as new.  Now I’m not  talking about a place with one or two bikes being repaired at any given time and a customer every week or two.  No, this place has literally hundreds of bikes!  And this woman knew which one was mine!  These folk are savants.  I walked out, new bike in tow and after I’d crossed the street I just had to give those pedals a spin.  Crisp autumn breeze in my hair, I was once again free to jump curbs and pop wheelies!  Okay, I just rode to where I was parked but it felt great!  It was like… riding a- okay, you get it.

So I figured since  I was already up here in Asbury I’d hit up Twisted Tree.  It’s here I sit now, espresso in front of me, Rilo Kiley, Ani DiFranco, Deb Talen and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs playing around me and people coming and going, getting greeted by name and treated like family.  It really doesn’t get a whole lot better than this.

And that’s about it for this post tonight.  A great afternoon in the shore neighborhoods, some great business and wonderful people.  Be sure to check back in soon for more local treasures and click here to suggest some of your own favorite places.
