October is Non-GMO Month- Get Involved!

At Nature’s Corner, we pride ourselves on being huge supporters of the Non-GMO movement. Giving our customers informed suggestions and providing top quality products is of utmost importance to us.

October is Non-GMO Month.

Non-GMO Month was created by the Non-GMO Project in 2010as a platform for raising awareness on the GMO issue. Citizens and organizations across North America are waking up to the failure of GMO technology, and discovering the risks GMOs pose to our health, our families, and our planet.

Non-GMO Month is an opportunity to coordinate our voices and our actions, so that we can stand up loudly and clearly for our right to know what’s in our food, and to choose non-GMO.

Protecting consumer choice and a non-GMO food supply require a multi-faceted approach and lots of team work, which is why this website was created. Together, we make Non-GMO Month happen by creating and participating in events, and spreading the word in our communities.

You might decide to celebrate Non-GMO Month by hosting a film screening in your living room and inviting the neighbors over, or maybe you’re ready to join in the historic Right2Know March from NYC to DC! There are lots of ways to get involved. Make sure your local natural foods store is registered for Non-GMO Month, and pledge to choose Non-GMO Project Verified foods for the month of October. Got another idea? Make it happen!

GMO Apples That Do Not Turn Brown… Would You Eat Them?

Here at Nature’s Corner, we ensure that our fresh produce is 100% Organic and that includes NO GMOs. A Canadian Company is one step closer to introducing a non-browning apple onto store shelves in the US and Canada. Okanagan Specialty Fruits has officially filed a request to start selling two varieties of its GMO apples—Arctic Golden and Arctic Granny—in Canada and the U.S. that the company claims can stay “fresh” for weeks without browning, even once the apples have been sliced. There are many issues at hand here, including the likelihood of GMO crops contaminating organic farms, consumer confusion, and the dangers of eating an apple that you can not see has gone bad. Connecticut Takes First Step Toward GMO Labeling Law

The federal government hasn’t been very responsive to the estimated 92 percent of Americans who want genetically engineered foods to be labeled, so states have started to take the issue on themselves: about 20 states are considering a labeling requirement. But it looks like Connecticut is close to actually passing one.

Congress Members ask FDA to Label GMO Foods

This week, 45 U.S. representatives and 10 U.S. senators signed a letter to Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Margaret Hamburg in support of a legal petition that asks the FDA to require labeling of genetically engineered (GMO) foods.

This is a good step towards being able to take better control over what we eat and make informed decisions on what  we want to feed our families.

Genetically engineered foods are foods made from organisms — mainly plants — that have had their genes modified to exhibit specific desired traits, such as tomatoes modified to delay ripening or corn with built-in resistances to herbicides and insects. Such foods have been sold on the market since 1996.
